Quest

From RomeroWiki

NOTE: The name QUEST was never a name for a project John Romero worked on. Quake was always Quake from the very beginning. QUEST was the codename for a game that id Software was developing following the release of Quake III in 1999. Graeme Devine was the lead designer of QUEST. The name Quake:The Fight For Justice was an early 1991 prototype top-down RPG that was scrapped after deciding the technology wasn't ready for id's vision.

The following information is incorrect and is here to show you how people can get their info wrong:

What would later turn into the fast paced first person shooter Quake (due to development constraints), Quest was a form of a large multiplayer RPG where players (assuming different roles; warrior, mage, etc.) would form parties and embark on quests across a spanning fantasy game world. Player controlled servers would link together through a large peer-to-peer network with server admins assuming the role of 'dungeon master' where they were given absolute control over everything in their personally crafted world (enemies, weapons, areas, etc.).

In relation to single player; users would assume the role of Quake - the most powerful person on the continent. Armed with a lightning charged maul (giant Thor like hammer), a regeneration ring and a trans-dimensional artifact Quake would kick ass and take names in the name of Justice (the organization that the player is working for).

Quest turned into Quake after a momentous company-wide meeting in November 1995, the majority of the game concept was abandoned in order to finish the game as fast as possible. Many of the art assets (including textures, sounds and models) ended up still being used, thus giving Quake an odd medieval/tech look to it. Some of the more predominate ideas surrounding Quest (the Quake name, Ring of Regeneration, Hammer weapon, and internet based player controlled servers) ended up in Quake over time as free releases (Quakeworld) or in expansion packs (Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity).
