(i wanted to put this here yesterday, but the server wasn't responding from "rome.ro", only from "johnromero.com" but the forum has fixed URLs to use the former)

I don't put this in the Programming section since its a released game (as released an online game can be anyway). If you remember my older post in the programming section about a raycasting engine i was doing in Flash, then you'll know what to expect (only much improved with a bunch of new features and a real game to go with it, not to mention a novel MOD player for the background music of course) :-). If not... well, don't worry, you'll learn once you click the first link below :D.

The story of the game is as follows
Quote from: the story
You are the apprentice of the great Wizard, sent in the unholy lands to recover the Black Rombo from the hands of the evil mage's castle. In your journey through the lands, you'll encounter several creatures in evil mage's service. Do not think twice before sending them to meet their creator; these are damned souls, lost forever in the realm from where the evil mage came and transformed an once healthy place to a dead zone where only the darkest entities enter.

This isn't only your test to prove yourself worthy of the great Wizard's trust, but also the beginning of a great quest to restore the scourged land to its former status.

(sorry for possible grammar mistakes -tell me if you find any- English isn't my native language)

Here is the game: http://www.runtimeterror.com/play/rombo/

Crappy youtube video
Can you find this? :D

There are some issues to be expected and i plan to add extra levels at some point as "addons" (playable from my server of course) or even add the ability to save levels on the server so people can make their own, although this requires some modifications to both the editor and the engine (but its a nice idea :-P).

Anyway. Comments? :-)

Very neat!

The only recommendations I have are to add sound effects and a mini-map of some sort.

The game runs very smoothly, however, and I enjoyed the music.  Plus, I think it's cool how you implemented the RPG-like "click to pick items up" control scheme so that it plays like a FPS mixed with an RPG.

Great work overall, and impressive as always.

It was going to have more RPG elements originally, but my action side took them off :-P

Haha, I just posted in your other Zero clash topic how I normally enjoy indie oldskool FPS games more.
And there you go, releasing an awesome old skool shooter.

Overall, I really liked it. The graphics/pixel-art, are the best I’ve seen from you to date.
I love the music (although, it would indeed be nice to see some sound effects).

I didn’t like the control setup :( it wasn’t too bad. But I find it annoying to not be able to walk
over items and pick it up. You need to click it. This becomes pretty stress full when your battling
zombies and your health runs low (now you need to choose between shooting and trying to click health).

But again, It was really cool to play!

I added a downloadable version of Rombo to the site (direct linky). Its basically the same game as the one in the site, but wrapped around a lightweight SWF wrapper i made and packaged in a nice and small NSIS installer :-).

At this point the game is exactly the same as if you played it via a web site, except that you can go to totally fullscreen while using all keys and such. I'll try to see if i can communicate with the wrapper from the Flash program so i can use the mouse in a more low-level way to implement mouse looking :-).

Haha, this is great. I have a favour for this kind of shooters. This one feels great in movement and in interaction.
I have to agree with Chubz regarding the sound effects, this would enhance the game. Plus, i would like to remap the keys.

I'm (also) working on splitting the RayFaster 1 engine (which Rombo uses) from the game (Rombo itself) so i can reuse it for more games while keeping all of them up-to-date and one of the things i'll add is more control over controls :-P. Basically i plan to add a new alternative controlling scheme which will use the mouse to turn the camera (if you move the mouse near the edges you'll turn the camera and the turning speed will depend on how near the edge the mouse cursor is), the ability to use an "action" key which will activate/pickup/fire whatever is near the screen (so you won't have to point and click if you want to do all-keyboard) and a special screen to remap keys to whatever you want (some people do not use WASD and feel uncomfortable with the arrows).
