Nice nice.  I wouldn't go with the 4 gb "hard drive" because I've heard bad things about it, and plus you have to modify your PSP and make it bigger and blockier it looks like.

There's no mod involved, it simply takes the place of the battery. It's a HDD plus a battery in a single back. Thanks for the heads up on the quality... would you have a link for someone saying it's no good... What is it that's wrong with it?

It does 'modify' the shape of your PSP, as Josh wrote. It adds a bulky .wad of plastic to the back of the battery compartment.

I think 1 or 2 Gigs of memstick is just fine... we'll have to wait for PSP 'v2' to support anything above 4 gig, so what's the big deal here :)

I can't give any direct sources atm but I believe I read in a PSM issue where the bottom line was something like "... because of [all?] this, we can't recommend this right now."  And then at least one more other place said something to the same idea if I remember correctly.  Just search for a review of it online and you should find something.

I might have read somewhere that it's a little slower too.  I'm really not sure though.

You know Sony's coming out with a 4gb stick soon too.  I did a google and found out that the 4gb HDD is about $200.. the 4 gb stick would probably be just a little more when it comes out is my guess.  It'd be better with the stick because then you wouldn't have that blocky monster of a PSP; you'd still have a nice, sleek-looking PSP. ;)

So bottom line.. I'd suggest reading some reviews.  If I had the money right now, I'd instead wait for a 4 gb stick.  But personally I think 1 or 2 gb will be enough for me when I get the money.

well thanks for the info. I did a search and couldn't find anything reliable. It stands to reason that it would be slower, but considering there is little speed that you need to be concerned with beyond loading time.
True it's larger, but the battery is listed as having twice the charge of a regular battery... still what they don't say is that with any drive it will take more energy to read from it as it's a motor as opposed to a simple chip to read from.

ok, latest question... I want to download all that great home movie content that's out there like the revision3 stuff and it is of course all ipod centric... what do you use to convert .m4v extension stuff over to .mp4?

That I don't know.  I haven't done much video converting.

There are video conversion programs.. I can't remember the name of that popular one.. something like PSPVideo8 or something.  YOu have to use some kind of video conversion software like that.  It might handle m4v, that's your main concern.

m4v is an iTunes format?  I think the new iTunes was supposed to have PSP support or something.  Sounds like I heard something about that.  See for yourself. :)

I have a software converter called X-oom that converts DVDs, Dvix, mov, avi, all the big ones... it doesn't convert these damn ipod vids.... grrr, I hate it when people make platform specific movies.

...does anyone else with a PSP (or even without one) have any insight on this?

There are also some media player homebrew apps that play various formats (mp3 for example).  I'm not sure about m4v though.  You should ask (or search "m4v" or "iTunes") on the PSP Updates forums.. http://pspupdates.qj.net

Awesome 2gb memory stick deal.. just about $99 plus less than $5 shipping.  Price might be going up though because PSP Updates reported it as $92.. the site says $99 point something now though.
