Well I rarely if ever come into the Console forum because I haven't owned one since my old Coleco-Vision. Well I just bought a PSP/was given a PSP for my b-day. I'm pretty damn exited about it as well. It sucks that it only comes in 32 meg memory formats, but that's ok for now I guess... So now I have to start looking into hacks, themes, software, blah, blah blah... it's got such a nice screen on it, wow! Not as many movies out there that I want to see... but that's OK I guess... Anyone have any thoughts on what kind of downloads are must haves... what I should be putting on here?

There are 1 and 2 gigabyte mem sticks for it out now. I  mainly use them to rip DVD video to.

Other than that,... I just buy games and update the firmware so that I can play them.  I don't care about the homebrew stuff.

  GTA: Liberty City Stories
   Infected
   Syphon Filter : Dark Mirror
   Pursuit Force
   Socom
   Ghost In The Shell
    Midway Arcade classics
    Namco Arcade classics
    Star Wars: Battlefront 2
    Megaman X
Tenchu (it's a Japanese import. No English version)
    Gottlieb Pinball
     Burnout Legends

Ok, I popped back to my laptop to type this because typing is a little tedious on the PSP... still, I love that I can wirelessly surg on my PSP. I can sit and view internet stuff on it. I can look at pics of the family etc.... too bad it won't let me watch AVI files of my son playing, but what the hey right?

sorry for the dual post, but I have questions about hacks etc... Anyone know of reliable ways of getting the hack to drop this thing back to version 2.0 so I can play Q1 and Q2 etc...

The Giga Pack comes with a 1 GB stick for $300.  There's also a "just the PSP" pack coming out for $200.  And of course the Value Pack is $250 with a 32 mb stick to anyone who's wondering.

The most important thing concerning this is your PSP's firmware version.  Find that out and do not upgrade at all until you're sure you want to.  Here's the rundown..

1.00 - Japanese only.  Really easy to run homebrew on.  Perfect compatibility.

1.50 - USA.  Almost as easy to run homebrew on.  Perfect compatibility.

1.51 and 1.52 - These can't really do anything.. can't run homebrew, no web browser, nothing.  Upgrade to 2.00 then you can downgrade to 1.50 if you wish.

2.00 - Downgradable to 1.50 (may be a little risky but you can look up more info on this; sounds relatively safe).  Has pretty good compatibility- not perfect (especially wifi-using homebrew has difficulty working).  All or nearly all emulators work.  With v2.00, you must use an eboot loader ( see www.fanjita.org ) to run homebrew.

2.01+ (up to the current latest firmware version, 2.60)- Can now run homebrew using a hack which utilizes an exploit in GTA: LCS.  So you need GTA: LCS to run any homebrew, and you must download the eboot loader from www.fanjita.org .

-------

Recommended apps (you can find these on http://pspupdates.qj.net or in the "working eboots" section of fanjita.org):

SNES emulator - SNES9xTYL v0.3 (v0.4 is coming soon with multiplayer wifi [adhoc mode] support)

NES - NesterJ

GBC - RIN

There are many more-- Genesis, TI calculators, etc.

Ahh so your firmware version is higher than 2.00.  Nope you can't downgrade anything except from 2.00 to 1.50, no other situation.  You can run homebrew on your firmware version though if you have GTA: LCS (see my above post).

Went to a forum on PSP hacks and it mentioned the GTA exploit so I just picked it up. Version 2.5 seems to be the only version you can get new now. :(
I went looking for the giga pack but couldn't find it. Considering the great deal I got on the version that bought I have no issue with that. It was the regular version with 32 meg card etc along with a bundled pool game for $250 cdn, not bad. I went and picked up a 1 gig card for $70 cnd after the mail in rebate. I further picked up a copy of Final Fantasy and Hellboy each for $10 Cdn.
I'm currently ripping my DVD copy of attack of the clones to see how well it will look at 900 megs in size.
There is a further 4 gig hard drive/battery pack selling for $299, that's a pretty sweet deal.

Nice nice.  I wouldn't go with the 4 gb "hard drive" because I've heard bad things about it, and plus you have to modify your PSP and make it bigger and blockier it looks like.

Check this out.. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EWE3GQ/sr=8-6/qid=1143303332/ref=sr_1_6/103-9276370-5235801?%5Fencoding=UTF8
4 gb stick on Amazon.  I thought there was a price tag on the page before but it doesn't seem to be there anymore if it ever was.. the shipping date says April 1st but that would be a stupid idea for an april fools' day prank for Amazon, lmao

Almost a year later and I STILL cannot get enough of Lumines.  Probably the most solid purchase I can recommend for it.
