I remember playing the original Ultima on the Apple II+ and there was a kings room in which you could go in, talk to the king and be sent on a quest. Once you completed the quest you would be paid a huge amount of money and pretty much buy a ship and do lots of fun stuff. Being only 12 at the time I remember deciding that I'd save sometime and kill the king and take his gold. There were a ton of guards all over the room and I'd save the game go in kill the king and run, I did this 8 to 10 times and die every time. I just couldn't make it. It seemed strange to me though that you could even attempt it if the game was going to kill you outright before you got out. Did anyone else play the original Ultima, Did anyone remember trying this? Here's a screen shot of the room: or in case the pic doesn't come up here's a link: http://www.emuunlim.com/doteaters/Ultima1snap2.gif

Of course. I beat the game, too. It was great. First time I played it was in 1981.

Yes, you have to finish the quests to win the game.
You can make it out of the castle alive, too, but it's really hard because of all the guards.

I didn't get a chance to play that one ... was it text-based? I remember playing an Ultima clone on the C64 that was text based with monochrome green green screen images in some areas.

No, it was all graphics. It's not an Ultima clone unless it's graphic tiles and has a similar play style.

Snipe, the pic I keep trying to post shows the room, but for some reason it's not showing up... try this... it's got some pics and an interesting story if you've got the time.

Ultima 1-5 were Apple II games, developed on the Apple II.
Ultima 6-9 were all developed on the PC.
My favorite is 5, Warriors of Destiny.

Just looking at some screenshots of Ultima 5, looked pretty good, not drastically different, but better than Ultima. I think I've said before that we only had a Green screen at the time so seeing it in colour may be the reason why I think it looks better.[/img]

Actually Ultima V does have better graphics.
I own the Ultima Collection (Akalabeth, Ultima 0-8), Ultima Underworld 1-2, Ultima Online, and Ultima IX. I own all of the Ultima games for PC except for the "Worlds of Adventure" spin-offs.

I'm going by screen shots, what was better about the graphics?

Geez, *everything* about the graphics was better. Everything was animated, the graphics were done by professional graphic artists versus Richard Garriott himself. The visibility algorithm was awesome - it didn't exist in Ultima 1. It's like comparing an Atari 2600 game to Zelda:The Minish Cap.

I've started with Ultima6 on my C64 and then moved on to U7 and U8 on the PC.
Since mid 1999 I'm playing UO and didn't switch to WoW recently (I play WoW, but just to relax after some intense hours of Dragon-Bashing in UO *g*).
I'll try and get the U1-3 and U4-6 Collections for my C64...really want to play the first five games.
